Visitors from countries with visa-on-arrival facility will have to go to a special counter to have their passports stamped with the on-arrival visa before going to the immigration clearance desk. The cost for VoA is USD 10,- for 7-day stay and USD 25,- for 30-day stay. The period of stay counts from the day the visitor arrives in the first international airport/sea port in Indonesia.

Visa-free facility

Visa-free facility is granted to the citizens of 11 countries whose governments extend visa free facility to Indonesian nationality. Included in the 11 countries and administrative districts that are granted the 30-day visa-free facility are:

Thailand
Malaysia
Singapore
Brunei Darussalam
Philippines
Hongkong Special Administrative Region (SAR)
Macau Special Administrative Region
Chile
Morocco
Peru
  1. Vietnam

Visitors with the visa-free facility will be able to proceed directly to the immigration clearance counter after deplaning.

Arriving tourists with Visa on Arrival or Visa-Free facility will be asked to show a return ticket at immigration desk when immigration clearance is taking place.

Visa applied overseas

Citizens of other countries not on list of visa on arrival or visa-free facility will be required to apply for a visa overseas (in their home country) before entering Indonesia.

Citizens of any country wishing to stay more than 30 days must also apply for an appropriate visa (cultural visit or business) at their nearest Indonesian Embassy or Consulate before traveling to Indonesia.

 Money Matters

The currency is Rupiah which is mostly used in daily transaction. Most daily dealings are in cash. Personal checks are almost unheard and credit card fraud is still on from time to time.

If you want to change US dollars to Rupiah for transactions or want to have some on hand for emergencies, be sure that you have mint-condition bills, meaning that US dollars are easily exchanged ONLY IF they are without any mark, fold or imperfection of any kind. You'll be hard pressed to be able to use the non-mint-condition bills you bring to Indonesia.

Counterfeit Money

While counterfeit money is found around the world, it has become a serious problem in Indonesia in recent years.

Ultra-violet lights are used in many banks and places of business to check the bills you present to them to see if they are counterfeit. With all the recent scares about counterfeit money, we thought it wise to include the signs to look for on the larger bills to ensure they are valid.

If you are taking money from a bank and want to ensure that the bills are not counterfeit, ask them to check your bills under the light before you accept them.

Don't think that just because you are withdrawing funds from a bank that the money is guaranteed safe. Too often for comfort, a bundle of 100 bills will have several counterfeit bills slipped into the bundle. Once you walk away from the bank counter, any discovered counterfeit bills become your loss.
